School Pride Scholarship

Write a 350-500 word essay about how your college has or will specifically contribute to your career path.

At The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, students are given many opportunities to be involved in their community and give back to the people that have been supportive of their future.  My involvement in organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity has confirmed that my passion and love in life is to help others.  The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has inspired me to continue my passion of lending a helping hand at any opportunity.  Our community is constantly searching for positive ways to reach out to the youth; I have been proud to be involved because they are the future of tomorrow.  As a mentor for a fifth grade girl for three consecutive years, I was the person she looked forward to seeing every week, the one she continues to look up to, and the one she trusts to share her thoughts and dreams.
Through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity chapter, I have also been involved in improving not only my own community but also others across the United States.  I had the wonderful opportunity to do Collegiate Challenge, a one-week spring break program designed for college students to travel to another state and build houses.  The journey to Johns Island, South Carolina was unforgettable.  With 20 other team members, we received tasks such as painting walls of an entire house, building a chain link fence, and even pouring concrete for the foundation of a house.  Meeting the people we were affecting made it all worthwhile; seeing the smiles on their faces reassured us that our work changed lives.  In our own community we have also worked to improve the homes of the Milwaukee area and participate in other community service activities such as helping the elderly, tabling in the union to promote our organization, and gift wrapping presents at The Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Bayshore Mall during the holiday season.

As the Vice President of The Diagnostic Imaging Student Association at school, I have organized meetings, researched and shared knowledge of the career fields of Radiologic Technology and Diagnostic Medical Sonography.  My future dream career of becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer would allow me to continue my passion of making a difference in the lives of others each and everyday.  Approximately 34 students applied to The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.  I am proud to say that due to my compassion, dedication, perseverance, and strong leadership abilities, I was one of the 12 students selected to be a part of the 2011-2013 class.  The knowledge that I obtained while in classes at my university was remarkable.  I received an award for The Most Volunteer Hours for the Spring 2009 semester through The UW-Milwaukee Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership amongst approximately 25,000 students attending the university, demonstrating that I am capable of taking on a leadership role in my future career.  The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has given me the opportunity to progress and excel as an individual.
